Honeycomb MCP: query traces and SLOs from your AI app
Honeycomb's own MCP server lets your AI app query your observability data: traces, events, metrics, SLOs, triggers and boards. ContextGate connects it to Claude, ChatGPT and Cursor with a Honeycomb sign-in, so an engineer can ask about a slow endpoint from their editor while every query lands in Activity.

Connect Honeycomb to Claude, ChatGPT or Cursor
- 1Click Connect Honeycomb free and sign in with your Honeycomb account.
- 2The tools are listed after you sign in, all on. Querying traces and events is the core of it; if a tool changes triggers or boards rather than reading them, switch it off unless you want your AI app editing your alerting.
- 3Add ContextGate to your AI app as a connector or MCP server. The steps for each app are on the Works with page.
- 4Ask your AI app how one of your Honeycomb SLOs is doing this week, then open Activity to see the query.
Observability questions for Claude or Cursor
- Query traces and events while you debug, without leaving your editor.
- Check metrics and SLOs for a service before or after a release.
- Look up the triggers and boards your team has set up in Honeycomb.
What ContextGate keeps track of
- Switch off any Honeycomb tool; it's hidden from your AI app and refused if called.
- Trace and event data can carry user IDs or emails, and a workspace policy can hide that personal data.
- Activity records every query, so you can see what was asked of Honeycomb during an incident.
ContextGate sees only the calls that go through it. Your AI app's built-in tools and chats aren't covered.
What you get with Honeycomb and ContextGate
- Your AI apps can use HoneycombClaude, Cursor, ChatGPT and other AI apps reach Honeycomb through the one ContextGate connection you add to them.
- You choose which tools they can useSwitch off any Honeycomb tool you don't want used. It's hidden from your AI apps and refused if called.
- Every call is checked and recordedYour policies check each call (for example, personal data is hidden and secrets are blocked), and Activity keeps a record of it.
ContextGate sees only the tool calls that go through it, not your AI app's built-in tools or your chats.
