Grafana MCP: dashboards, Loki and Mimir status in your AI app

Grafana MCP brings your observability stack into your AI app: query a public dashboard panel for time series data, check Grafana's health, and inspect Loki and Mimir components such as ring status and store gateway tenants. ContextGate connects Grafana Cloud's own MCP server, or an API-key app connector, to Claude, ChatGPT and Cursor, and records each lookup in Activity.

How to connect Grafana to Claude, ChatGPT or Cursor

  1. 1Click Connect Grafana free and sign in with your Grafana Cloud account.
  2. 2Every tool is on after you connect, and the full list appears then. Keep the status and dashboard tools, and switch off anything that writes, such as sending OpenTelemetry logs into Loki, if your AI app should only look.
  3. 3Add ContextGate to your AI app as a connector or MCP server. The steps for each app are on the Works with page.
  4. 4Ask your AI app whether your Grafana instance is healthy and can reach its database, then open Activity to see the check.

Grafana checks to run from a chat

  • Query a panel on a public dashboard for its time series data.
  • Confirm Grafana's web server is running and can reach its database.
  • Inspect Loki and Mimir internals, like the index gateway and ruler rings or the HA tracker leader for each Prometheus cluster.
  • List the tenants with blocks in the store gateway, or check the Enterprise license status.

Keep Grafana reads and writes apart

  • Switch off log ingestion and anything else that writes, and your AI app is left with read-only checks.
  • Policies check every call, so secrets such as tokens can be blocked from passing through.
  • Activity keeps a record of each Grafana call your team's AI apps make.

What you get with Grafana and ContextGate

  • Your AI apps can use GrafanaClaude, Cursor, ChatGPT and other AI apps reach Grafana through the one ContextGate connection you add to them.
  • You choose which tools they can useSwitch off any Grafana tool you don't want used. It's hidden from your AI apps and refused if called.
  • Every call is checked and recordedYour policies check each call (for example, personal data is hidden and secrets are blocked), and Activity keeps a record of it.

ContextGate sees only the tool calls that go through it, not your AI app's built-in tools or your chats.
